A Geotechnical Engineer undertakes geotechnical studies, design and construction supervision and geotechnical control; improves geotechnical standards and technology; manages consultancies and contracts; provides geological, advisory, ground investigation and material testing, slope maintenance and emergency services; and controls quarrying activities and the use of explosives. Successful candidates may be posted to work in other Departments [See Note (4)].

For Geotechnical Stream: Candidates should (a) be Corporate Members of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (Civil or Geotechnical Discipline) elected after 5 December 1975 or equivalent [see Note (1)]; (b) have Level 1 results in the two language papers (Use of Chinese and Use of English) in the Common Recruitment Examination (CRE) and a pass result in the Aptitude Test in the CRE [See Note (2)]; and (c) have 2 years’ experience in geotechnical engineering. or (a) have a Hong Kong degree in civil engineering, engineering geology or geology, or equivalent; (b) have Level 1 results in the two language papers (Use of Chinese and Use of English) in the Common Recruitment Examination (CRE) and a pass result in the Aptitude Test in the CRE [See Note (2)]; and (c) have 4 years’ post-graduate experience in geotechnical engineering. For Geologist Stream: Candidates should (a) have a Hong Kong degree in engineering geology or geology, or equivalent; (b) have Level 1 results in the two language papers (Use of Chinese and Use of English) in the Common Recruitment Examination (CRE) and a pass result in the Aptitude Test in the CRE [See Note (2)]; and (c) have 4 years’ relevant post-graduate experience.
