A Technical Officer (Mechanical) is mainly deployed on (i) preparing mechanical drawings and charts with computer, making engineering calculations and designs relating to minor mechanical engineering works, undertaking occasional site engineering measurements; (ii) assisting in the preparation of equipment price schedules and cost estimates, inputting computer programmes and data, checking documents submitted by contractors; (iii) preparing planned maintenance programme for plant and equipment and assisting in related work; (iv) carrying out work on project management related computer system/applications; and (v) acquiring computer hardware/software and providing technical support on IT matters.
(Remark: May be required to work in remote areas, work irregular hours or shifts.)

Candidates should have (a) a Diploma or Higher Certificate in Mechanical Engineering from a Hong Kong polytechnic/polytechnic university or the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education/technical institute/technical college, or equivalent; (b) met the language proficiency requirements of Level 2 or above in Chinese Language and English Language in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSEE) or Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (HKCEE), or equivalent [Note (1),(2)]; and (c) a pass result in the Basic Law Test (BLT) [Note (3),(4)].

(Note: (1) For civil service appointment purpose, 'Grade C' and 'Grade E' in Chinese Language and English Language (Syllabus B) in the HKCEE before 2007 are accepted administratively as comparable to 'Level 3' and 'Level 2' respectively in Chinese Language and English Language in the 2007 HKCEE and henceforth. (2) All qualifications required should be obtained on or before the application deadline. Qualifications obtained after the application deadline will not be considered. (3) All applicants for civil service jobs will be assessed on their Basic Law knowledge. A pass result in the BLT is an entry requirement for civil service jobs requiring non-degree / non-professional qualifications at or above completion of secondary education level. Only those candidates who have passed the BLT will be considered for appointment. Attaining a score at or above 53 out of the full mark of 100 (i.e. getting at least 8 out of 15 questions correct) will be deemed to have a pass result in the BLT. The BLT result will also constitute an appropriate weighting in a candidate's overall assessment. (4) For candidates who have not taken the BLT or have not attained a pass result in the BLT at the time of application, they may still apply for the job and arrangements will be made for them to take the BLT during the recruitment process.)
