A Technical Officer Trainee (Civil) is required to undergo training for a period of three years and is mainly deployed on preparing drawings, charts and diagrams of all types relating to civil engineering work, making simple engineering calculations, undertaking occasional site assignments and working with computer-aided drafting machines.
(Note: May be required to work in remote areas, work irregular hours or shifts.)

Candidates should have (a)(i) a Certificate in Civil Engineering from a Hong Kong polytechnic / polytechnic university, the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education / technical institute / technical college, or equivalent; or (ii) Level 3 or above in Mathematics and Level 2 or equivalent or above in four other subjects [Note (1),(2),(4)] including Physics or Combined Science (Physics & Chemistry with the Physics component at Level 2 or above) or Combined Science (Physics & Biology with the Physics component at Level 2 or above) or Integrated Science in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSEE), or equivalent; or (iii) Grade C or above in Mathematics and Level 2 / Grade E or above in four other subjects [Note (2),(3),(4)] including Physics or Engineering Science in the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (HKCEE), or equivalent; (b) met the language proficiency requirements of Level 2 or above in Chinese Language and English Language in HKDSEE or HKCEE, or equivalent [Note (3),(4)]; and (c) a pass result in the Basic Law Test (BLT) [Note (5),(6)].

Note (1) For civil service appointment purpose, "Attained with Distinction" in Applied Learning subjects (subject to a maximum of two Applied Learning subjects), and Grade C in Other Language subjects in the HKDSEE are accepted as equivalent to Level 3 in the New Senior Secondary subjects in the HKDSEE. "Attained" in Applied Learning subjects (subject to a maximum of two Applied Learning subjects), and Grade E in Other Language subjects in the HKDSEE are accepted as equivalent to Level 2 in the New Senior Secondary subjects in the HKDSEE. (2) The subjects may include Chinese Language and English Language. (3) For civil service appointment purpose, 'Grade C' and 'Grade E' in Chinese Language and English Language (Syllabus B) in the HKCEE before 2007 are accepted administratively as comparable to 'Level 3' and 'Level 2' respectively in Chinese Language and English Language in the 2007 HKCEE and henceforth. (4) All qualifications required should be obtained on or before the application deadline. Qualifications obtained after the application deadline will not be considered. (5) All applicants for civil service jobs will be assessed on their Basic Law knowledge. A pass result in the BLT is an entry requirement for civil service jobs requiring non-degree / non-professional qualifications at or above completion of secondary education level. Only those candidates who have passed the BLT will be considered for appointment. Attaining a score at or above 53 out of the full mark of 100 (i.e. getting at least 8 out of 15 questions correct) will be deemed to have a pass result in the BLT. The BLT result will also constitute an appropriate weighting in a candidate's overall assessment. (6) For candidates who have not taken the BLT or have not attained a pass result in the BLT at the time of application, they may still apply for the job and arrangements will be made for them to take the BLT during the recruitment process.
